Group Constellation in Buedapest: B. Szalai

Working in multidisciplinary teams the workshop aimed to propose alternatives and inclusive designs for kids with Disabilities from the Csillagház school in Budapest.

Through a co-design approach in interdisciplinary international teams - 17 students of social design and teacher education from Austria, and design students from Hungary - developed individualized design tools for children with special needs.

This project explores the engagement with children with multiple disabilities and designing things for them in order to develop empathic and inter/transdisciplinary skills. It analyses a practice-based approach in design though observation, self-reflection, documentation and interviews conducted by students. The methods used were “research through design, practice-based” and “design thinking”.

Topic of the sub- group constellation: Equality

We started the creative process raising some questions in order to understand the different thinking’s, cultures, and getting to know each other and our abilities and contributions for this project.

What does EQUALITY means for the team?

In what type of context can we say that we could interact in an honest level with a kid with certain disability? (Honest meaning not letting them win a game by purpose for example).

What could be “that thing” that could create a horizontal communication between you and the kid with disability?

What is the connexion between a kid with certain disability and a person with non-disability? What is the union?

Creating together….. A melody!

– After long debates trying to give answer to the previous questions, we discovered that when we sing together everybody has a role in the song/melody making. There is a final outcome that we always create together. Without noticing, or giving any type of relevance, every day there is an opportunity to create special connections with others when we sing together a song we like.

That’s how we started with the concept of THE CHOIR GAME where everybody have a responsibility: to give a single tune from (DO RE MI FA SO LA SI DO).

By giving one instrument with one tune to each player, (kid with disability, kid with non-disability, or adults) we could create a path that leads to a melody. At the end of the game, all the participants apart from having the happy feeling of not only of belonging to something will also have the feeling of success of having the Melody finished.  A melody was created where everybody had the same rules, no matter the abilities.

At the end of the game, the happy feeling of not only to belong to something but also the success of creating a melody together no matter the abilities could be increased.

Technical aspect: At this stage the instruments would be connected with a rope or wire in order to create the path of the melody and help the players to follow up the order.

About the instrument/prototyping:

·        Instruments with quite attractive shape the eye and easy to use.
·  Every instrument will have the same role and responsibility to  create the group sound.
·        A dynamic that could motivate other senses.
·        Friendly for the different abilities of the kids to hold something.
